WHAT WE DO

The Gender Equity Initiative in Global Surgery (GEIGS) aims to address gender disparities in surgical fields worldwide and to make surgical training and practice environments more equitable, just, and inclusive.

We have three Councils that tackle this topic through Research, Advocacy, and Mentorship and Education. In addition, we have Regional Liaisons from WHO-designated global regions (WPRO, SEARO, PAHO, EURO, EMRO, AFRO) who organize GEIGS initiatives based on and meeting the needs of the particular region. Finally, the Diversity, Equity, and Justice (DEJ) Task Force strives to ensure that all the work that GEIGS does as an organization, both internally and externally, is equitable, just, and inclusive.

RESEARCH

We aim to ensure access to research opportunities and research capacity for trainees from all backgrounds and genders, to map the global state of gender equity and surgical, obstetric, and anesthesia care, and to develop evidence-based methodologies for empowering all genders in the surgical workforce.

MENTORSHIP

We work with a mosaic mentorship framework including mentorship pods. This framework allows us to empower peer, near-peer-, and senior-junior-mentorship relationships and to instill a sense of leadership in both our mentors and mentees.

ADVOCACY

In addition to research and mentorship projects, we also promote discussion on topics related to gender equity and global surgery on multiple platforms. These include journal clubs, twitter chats, webinars, as well as our General Assembly and our Blog.

EDucation

In addition to other projects, we publish blogs to promote topics  related to gender equity and global surgery and educate people. We also host  webinars, as well as our General Assembly to engage more poeple in the conversation.

DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND JUSTICE TASK FORCE

The Diversity, Equity, and Justice (DEJ) Task Force oversees work of all other councils to ensure that organizational structure and workflow are equitable within the Initiative. They additionally work on projects to ensure key topics such as intersectionality, decolonization, and gender inclusivity are centered in the Initiative's efforts.
